III. Kabbalah ("Received Tradition") and Jewish Mysticism

1. Sepher ha Zohar
The Sepher ha-zohar, or "Book of Splendor" (1st and 13th century) is the scripture of Jewish mysticism. According to tradition, much of the original material comes from Simeon ben Yohai (2nd century) and his disciples (and possibly older sources), but the major portion of the Zohar was written by Moses de León (1250-1305) of Spain.

2. Sefer Yetzirah
The Sefer Yetzirah or "Book of Creation" (3rd century) is the oldest known Hebrew text on esoteric sciences and cosmology. It is an anonymous creation, often falsely attributed to Abraham and thus sometimes called Otiyyot de Avraham Avinu ("Alphabet of Our Father Abraham").

3. Sefer ha-bahir
The Sefer ha-bahir or "Book of Brightness" was first published in 12th century Provence, and appears to be a compilation of mystical texts and sayings often credited to early Jewish scholars called tannaim (1st to 3rd century) and amoraim (3rd to 6th century). It presents a symbolic commentary on the Tanakh.

4. Sefer ha-temuna
The Sefer ha-temuna or "Book of the Image" (13th century) expounds on the mystical significance of the letters of the alphabet as invisible counterparts of the Torah.

5. Sefer Hasidim
The Sefer Hasidim or "Book of the Pious" (13th century) is a religious guide recounting the lives and deeds of medieval German Jews known as Hasidim ("Pious Ones").
