Yogacharya Code of Conduct

Our Gurudev Paramahamsa Hariharananda dictated to Yogi Sarveshwarananda the following Guidelines for Yogacharyas
(teachers of Kriya Yoga) in Miami in 1999.

1. Detachment is the main quality of an acharya.

2. An acharya should talk in a spiritual mood solely for the betterment of others, for the spiritual development of disciples.

3. It is better for acharyas to remain silent rather than to speak bad of others.

4. An acharya should lead a pure, divine, spiritual life— being an ideal for others.

5. An acharya should be a teacher, not a cheater.

6. An acharya should maintain a divine mood. No one is to see the negatives of others, rather every one must find and rectify his own defects.

7. While initiating (especially ladies), an acharya should be extremely careful—not to touch the cheek, chin, front part of the body, the back part of the body below the navel center, etc.

8. An acharya gives extreme affection and holy love to all disciples. He maintains regard for all, and sees everyone as God in human being.

9. An acharya should not hug or kiss disciples of the opposite sex.

10. An acharya should take simple, regulated food.

11. No smoking, no drinking of alcohol. An acharya should be free from all addictions and stimulants.

12. An acharya never gets involved in political discussions with the disciples.

13. Acharyas must meditate daily, regularly and sincerely.

14. Acharyas should come to the President (Gurudev) at least once a year and meditate with him.

15. All acharyas should teach with amity, love and should teach the technique uniformly.

16. Acharyas should be very careful about money, sex, food, ego (all lower centers).

17. Acharyas should not waste time unnecessarily; they should avoid watching televison.

18. Acharyas must keep detailed account of money belonging to the organization.

19. Acharyas must keep in regular contact with the President regarding programs and related affairs.

20. If any doubt or difficult situation arises, the acharya must talk to Sri Gurudev.

21. An acharya must be true to himself in his inner and outer life.

22. An acharya must study the scriptures daily.

23. An acharya should write something on spiritual ideas regularly.

24. An acharya maintains implicit faith, love and loyalty for Gurudev and the technique.

25. A monk-acharya, an unmarried acharya or even a householder acharya must be very careful about his personal style. They should be above even the appearance of impropriety.

26. An acharya always remembers God and Guru in every breath. God-Realization is the goal of life.

27. An acharya must keep himself free from bad company.

28. What are the signs of an acharya? At a glance people will know he is an acharya. People will not find a worldly defect in him. What kind of talk should come out of the mouth of the acharya? All will receive some spiritual lesson from his words. How should he walk? From his every movement people will see that he is an acharya.
