As far as I can remember, my best friends have always been books. I discovered early in life that you can curl up between their inviting sheets on any boring day and go on incredible adventures inside. By the time you emerge out of the book, you are left palpitating with joy and charged with power for days or weeks at a time.
Over the years, as my soul grew more and more hungry for words of purity, love, and wisdom, I came to gradually whittle down my literary appetite to seven main dishes—a natural, unconscious process of selection which I have kept to this day:
1. Scriptures from the World's Religions, for guidance. It is the main course of my diet, and often the only one, for it contains within itself all the other six—stories of great prophets and spiritual heroes, mystical poems, sermons, historical accounts, allegories, myths, quests, and magical adventures.
2. Biographies of Saints and Sages, for courage.
3. Devotional and Mystical Poetry, for love.
4. Spiritual and Inspirational Novels, for inspiration.
5. Spiritual Essays and History, for reflection.
6. Wisdom Tales and Mythology, for wonder.
7. Children's Magical Literature, for innocence.
